2nd Annual

Perennial Plant Sale

In aid of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)

About our Fundraiser

The May 24th Perennial Plant Sale is being organized by Nancy Thompson and Sandy Carlton to raise funds for Diabetes Research.

Nancy Thompson is a Nurse in the Emergency Department of the McMaster Medical Center. Nancy as well as being intensely passionate about her garden, is involved in the daily lives of her 4 incredible grand daughters.

Sandy Carlton is a specialty grower of Hemerocallis and has owned and operated Arcadian Daylilies, a mail-order company, since 1995. Sandy is also employed in the Marketing Department at Plant Products Co. Ltd. Canada’s largest fertilizer manufacturer and horticultural supplier.

Nancy’s grand daughter Paige was diagnosed as Diabetic in January 2006 at the age of 15 months. Since then, Paige’s family and friends have become increasingly more involved in fundraising for JDRF, including participation in Hamilton’s annual Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes as the “Bryant Bunch”.

Nancy and Sandy both have had lifelong interests in botany and gardening. In May of 2007 with just a few days planning they decided to place an ad in the Hamilton Spectator and hold a plant sale with proceeds going to JDRF. In 4 hours about 100 plants were sold and the positive response was enough encouragement to plan a much larger sale for 2008.

The 2008 sale will include close to a thousand plants looking for new homes.

  • Ornamental grasses
  • Drought Tolerant perennials for the Water Conscious gardener
  • Shade loving perennials
  • Herbs
  • Hosta
  • Daylilies

Many of the plants in this sale have been donated from private gardens of friends and associates. From their professional grower contacts, Nancy & Sandy have received many donated plants and been able to access some exotic and exciting perennials from wholesale growers.

About Paige

Paige is the second of 3 sisters. In late 2005 she was not gaining weight then started losing. In January 2006 after several visits to the family Doctor for an ear infection she lay limp with no energy and was taken to emerge where she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. That was a close call. Her blood sugar was 78. That’s Life Threatening, but today she is a well adjusted 3 year old trying to live as normal a life as possible.

Paige’s parents have produced a 4 minute video on Paige’s story and posted it on YouTube. Please take the time to watch it and feel the love this family shares.

Why we should be supporting Diabetes Research

Paige has Type 1 Diabetes also referred to as Juvenile Onset Diabetes. Type 2 or Adult Onset Diabetes is closely related although may not require dependence on Insulin injections.

With an aging population and an overweight population Type 2 Diabetes is nearing epidemic proportions. Both Diabetes, include the risk of many health and medical complications. Complications that will put an incredible strain on our Health Care systems and our Social Safety Nets in future.

Researches tell us that Diabetes is an ultimately curable disease. The current research is making exciting progress, and there is much published information on how Diabetes could be linked to an Auto Immune response. There is more data that makes Diabetes look like a neurological Disorder.

Researchers need our support to continue their important work to unravel the causes of this disease. With fingers crossed, the answers and a cure could be close, even just around the next corner.

We wait for the day that there will be a cure available for Paige.

PS

Note to media – we’d love your support in publicizing this event, and we welcome any and all suggestions on how to make our 2009 sale even more successful.
